Staten Islanders will be spending the whole year celebrating the 350th anniversary of a milestone.

European settlers first made their home on the island in 1661.

To mark the occasion, "SI350" was started in 2008 and has organized monthly events to promote the borough's history.

This month's events include an essay contest, art exhibitions, and historical workshops.

"I'm partial to trains, so I would send them to ride on the Staten Island Rapid Transit -- if they don't regularly take it as part of their regular commute," said SI350 Member Kenneth Gold.

"We are hoping that Islanders will get a new appreciation of their borough, but also that people from off-Island will find it intriguing," said SI350 Co-Chairperson Lorie Weintrob.
