The Fitness Ridge in Malibu, California offers a way to get in shape just like the biggest losers. NY1’s Valarie D’Elia filed the following Travel with Val report. The second “The Biggest Loser”-branded weight-loss resort, the brand-new Fitness Ridge in Malibu, is officially open. Unlike its Utah predecessor, the California branch will be used as a location for the NBC hit reality show.
While visitors to the resort might be doing crunches next to the stars of the show, Fitness Ridge guests will be on a different program than that of “The Biggest Loser” contestants.
“What we did on the TV show and what we are doing here at Fitness Ridge are definitely different, but it does kind of show you that you putting in the work and you eating right does do it,” says Daris George, a contestant on “The Biggest Loser.”
Visitors to Fitness Ridge are put on a 1,200 calorie a day meal plan—no burgers or beer here.
“It uses a lot of nutrient dense, low-calorie options, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean proteins,” says registered dietician Krista Haynes. “They don’t realize that the big plate of food has only at most 400 calories.”
Guests say they do not notice the calorie restriction.
"You're not starving all day long,” Michelle McKnight, a guest at the resort, says. “You’re always not hungry.”
“The Biggest Loser” bootcamp is based on highly-disciplined weekly stays. Six hours of daily exercise begins with strenuous hikes and includes four workouts split between the pool, fitness and cardio rooms.
The staff at the resort makes sure visitors participate.
“If you are not in class our trainers will come and find you,” says John Yohman, fitness manager of the resort. “You will get lots of encouragement to keep going, and the results aren’t only measured in pounds and inches. People feel better; they derive great amounts of self-confidence by accomplishing what they do here. We transform people’s lives, and it’s really cool when you can do that.”
The price for the one week program starts at $2,295 per person, based on double occupancy in a queen bedded room.
