The United States Postal Service is preparing to crack down on people who are hoarding mail delivery bins and other equipment, but an amnesty period that lasts until November 26 means there's still time to get things sorted out before fines or possible jail time arise. NY1's Consumer Watch reporter Asa Aarons filed the following report.

They could be lurking down the hallway, under the desk and out of sight, foisted upon you by a trusted friend or simply stacked up and waiting in the corner.

No matter the case, it’s time to answer for the whereabouts of any United Postal Service Mail bins you’re holding onto.

“They’re our property, and we’d like the property returned,” says Donna Harris, U.S. postal inspector. “It’s a crime. It’s a federal crime punishable by up to three years in prison and/or $250,000 fine.”

Harris is serious: there are people, she says, who have served jail time for this offense.

USPS officials say the missing bins are costing them serious money. The $6 bins, the $22 pallets, and the large $170 hampers add up to big bucks.

“It’s a huge cost to the postal service. $50 million is a huge amount that the postal service can ill afford to lose,” says Harris.

There is a way to get off the hook, though. From now through November 26, the post office will let you return their stuff no questions asked. Just drop it off at a post office, or if you have several items and can’t transport them, they will do a one-time only pick up. Just email hqmte@usps.gov and request equipment pickup. Be sure to include an address.

After November 26, postal inspectors could come visit an office near you.

“After that time, the postal inspection service will enforce that law,” says Harris.
