City officials were canvassing the city Wednesday to get out the word about an upcoming deadline to enroll for universal pre-kindergarten.

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito handed out fliers near a subway stop in the East Harlem neighborhood she represents.

The speaker told parents they have until April 23rd to apply for the 5,000 seats available in public schools.

She said similar efforts are happening in other districts.

"Throughout the city we have about 25 Council members that are out disseminating information to their constituents, letting them know that there is this deadline. But this is only the first phase of the campaign. There's also going to be seats available through non-profit organizations and other organizations and there will be other deadlines when those seats become available," Mark-Viverito said.

Meanwhile, the city's First Lady Chirlane McCray and Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña are starring in a new PSA encouraging parents to sign up their 4-year-olds for new full-day pre-k seats opening September 30th.

The ads will appear on screens in taxi cabs across the city.

Parents can apply in person at an enrollment office or through the Department of Education website at schools.nyc.gov.
