The family of Eric Garner on Saturday commemorated what would have been his 44th birthday by joining the Reverend Al Sharpton at his National Action Network rally.

Garner would have turned 44 on Monday.

"My son, he's no longer with me and I feel this everyday. Every day I die a little more," said Garner's mother, Gwen Carr.

"I just think at this time last year we were sitting down at Applebees eating dinner for his birthday and now this year all I can do is talk to the sky and hope he hears me," said Garner's widow, Esaw Garner.

After the rally the family joined community members on Staten Island at the spot where Garner died as police tried to arrest him in July.

The medical examiner determined Garner died when police put him in an alleged chokehold which is not illegal, but is against NYPD guidelines.

The Staten Island chapter of the Nation Action Network says it is beginning a series of weekly rallies to call for the arrest of the officer they feel is responsible. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
