Several hundred competitors crossed the East River in the seventh annual Brooklyn Bridge Swim on Sunday.

They dove in on the Brooklyn side, then crossed under the world-famous bridge to the Manhattan side, just north of the South Street Seaport.

The challenging one-kilometer course pitted swimmers against strong East River currents and their own fears.

"I've done this now for a while, it's a way of life. I'm just happy that I can still be in there and be competitive," said a swimmer.

"Memorial Day I did the Alcatraz swim, and so the Brooklyn Bridge swim seemed iconic to me you know, 'sea to shining sea,'" said another.

"You look up and you see that you're swimming under this beautiful bridge and it feels great. It's a view that most New Yorkers don't get a chance to see," said a third.

The race was organized by the group NYC Swim, which sponsors swimming events by other city landmarks, including Liberty Island and Governors Island. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
