Subway service along the Eighth Avenue line in Upper Manhattan is back up and running after a man who escaped police custody in handcuffs Monday caused an underground manhunt.

Police say Vincens Vuktilaj, 18, had been out on bail for grand larceny and was being re-arrested for another grand larceny in connection with a string of chain-snatchings at his home on 145th Street and Saint Nicholas Avenue.

Police additionally charged Vuktilaj with two counts of assault and one count of escape Monday.

Police say he was being led from the building in handcuffs when he broke away and fled into the 145th Street subway station.

Service on the A, B, C and D trains was suspended for hours and one train was evacuated as police investigated.

Subway customers found the disruption to their commutes frustrating.

"It's pretty amazing that they inconvenience thousands of people. I understand the need to catch this guy, but if it happened on 145th, that's 20 blocks away, did he run into the tunnel or something?" said one straphanger.

"I usually take the train home and I'm just a little disappointed that I can't even get in the train station," said another straphanger.

"It's not safe so I guess it's a good thing that we're not using the subway," noted a third straphanger.

Police say Vuktilaj was later caught as he emerged from the 135th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue subway station.

Police say he is the same man who was arrested on Friday for a string of necklace robberies in Manhattan last month. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
