Police in Manhattan confirmed Monday that what was first thought to have been a kidnapping in Washington Heights on Friday was actually a group of friends holding a surprise birthday party.
Surveillance video released by the New York City Police Department shows a man and a woman walking near 173rd Street and Haven Avenue, followed by two other men and a dark minivan.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the man and woman were driven in the van to the Poconos for a birthday celebration.
Kelly said one of the men involved realized the misunderstanding when his mother told him about the investigation.
"He goes to one of the news sites and he sees the film, realizes he was involved in this, he calls our tips hotline and tells them what happened. So there's no criminal charges here. We just wish they use email next time," the commissioner said.
No charges are expected to be filed.
