There are strong indications the Justice Department is investigating whether Republican Rep. Michael Grimm broke the law.
The House Ethics Committee is looking into whether he violated campaign finance law in exchange for helping an unnamed foreign citizen get a green card.
The Committee announced Monday that it will freeze that investigation at the request of the Department of Justice.
The news means the agency is likely examining the same issue.
Grimm, who represents Staten Island and part of Brooklyn, won re-election earlier this month, despite the arrest of a former top fundraiser on immigration fraud charges.
He says he did nothing wrong.
"They're going to wait and see what the Department of Justice -- which we've been working with - their final determination," Grimm said. "And like I've said from the beginning, any logical inquiry is going to yield that there was no wrongdoing. So we just to have to continue with the process."
The Justice Department has not returned calls for comment.
