The George Washington Bridge is getting a half-a-billion dollar makeover.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says it will be the largest rehabilitation project ever on the 80-year-old span.

It includes steel repairs, paint removal and repainting on the bridge's lower level.

Street bus ramps, the 178th and 179th Street ramps, and Center Avenue and Lemoine Avenue bridges will also all undergo repairs.

The Port Authority says toll increases approved last August paved the way for the project.

Construction is set to begin next year.

The bridge project is expected to create over 2,000 and $704 million in economic activity.
